Look Behind the Closed Doors

After my post yesterday, I have felt I have to write more, get closer into the realities of pushing prostitution indoors.

I want to confront why it is possible to believe that it must be safer – I want to look at some of the many myths that make that illusion.

I want to reach into your hearts – and I want to see the escort, the woman in the sauna, the girlfriend material, the woman doing video sex for you, the woman in the brothel – I want you see all women and girls doing indoors prostitution as fully human. Not just goods to be brought and sold for selfish sexual needs.

Only if you can know and truly believe that all the prostituted are fully human – not just objects to give sexual services – can you enter the world of indoors prostitution and know the ordinary violence that is its norm.

Know the prostitute is fully human, and then you can feel, see and hear her pain, her fear and her lack of hope.

See as sub-human – then any and all sexual violence is acceptable for she does feel pain, cannot know human terror, and hope does have any relevance to an object.

I want to rid your mind of the lies that prostitution is some right for men to have – rid yourself of the idea that men cannot survive without sex – heck I suppose their dicks will fall off.

Get rid of the fear tactics of the sex trade apologists who will tell you that men must have the prostituted class – or they will go crazy and rape “real” women and girls.

Do you not see that if you buy into that horrible myth, you are saying the prostituted are sub-humans – saying loud and clear that men has permission to rape and sexually torture the prostituted in order to save real women and girls.

You are saying that men are incapable of controlling their violence – that is something I will never believe.

Men who are violent make a conscious decision to destroy another person – he can at any time stop himself.

He does not stop because it gives him power, it give him the thrill of another’s terror.

Most punters that make the choice to torture a prostitute, will be non-violent outside of the sex trade, often will appear good men and respectful to non-prostituted women and girls.

This is not because they use prostitution as some kind of sick therapy – it is because they view the prostitutes as goods to be fuck, to be hurt, and to be in the line of all his hate fuelled by porn.

The punter can and does harm the prostitute for he views it as a non-event, he is just getting his money-worth.

Now remembering that – look clearly into what is wrong with indoors prostitution.

One myth that makes me sick is the myth that only street-based prostitutes get murdered.

There is no truth to that – for all prostitutes can be murdered, there is no safe place or standard of prostitution that stops those murders.

Most prostituted women and girls who were murdered after being picked on the streets are killed indoors.

They are killed in the punter’s living space, they are killed in hotels, they are killed above clubs.

If they are killed outdoors it is in secluded places, abandoned buildings or cars.

They are not killed in the public gaze, and they are thrown away.

Prostituted women and girls who work indoors live with the reality of being murdered, or knowing many prostitutes disappear as well.

Christ, being murdered or disappearing from prostitution is equal opportunities whether you are on the street or indoors.

The major difference with indoors prostitution is not the scale of deaths – it is how efficient the sex trade is at making all those deaths invisible.

All murders of indoors prostitutes are cleaned up in-house, or if it is seen by outsider is made out that it was some random sick punter or the prostitute did not keep herself safe enough.

I have never met any long-term prostitute from any form of prostitution – who did not know of prostituted women and girls who have disappeared or were most likely are dead.

We live with the disappeared each and every day – but we also live with being told it must be safe.

We fight for abolition to give those ghosts some real justice.

Please don’t sit on the fence, and allow more ghosts to be made.

  1. I was a volunteer at a rape crisis centre. I know the fallacy of the argument. I think people – ordinary people – who support any proposals to legalise prostitution all imagine that life inside one of them will be like that film “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” – sweetness and light, clean and tidy and most importantly, out of the way, done and dusted and something they won’t have to think about anymore.
Your writing is brutally honest and that’s what’s needed.

  2. Rebecca this is so powerful and brilliant. Thank you for your strength and your voice.

This made me cry, because it’s so true:

  4. Dear Rebecca,

I wish to quote what Stella has quoted from this, and re-post this link on my facebook Note in case if I need to remind others of the danger prostitutes live in, regardless of in/outdoor. Is that okay, or how else would you like me to keep this as a reference?

  5. Rebecca, it is one of the worst myths that moving prostitution “indoors” (as if it weren’t indoors anyway) will protect the prostituted from violence.
You cannot protect women from violence when they are experiencing something that is inherently violent.
